Home Services SEO: The Complete Guide for Contractors
Our SEO team has ranked contractors in over 300 cities across Canada and the US.
Home services SEO is the process of ranking a contractor's website and Google Business Profile for the local, high-intent searches homeowners use when they need work done. The four things that move the needle most are (1) Google Business Profile optimization for the map pack, (2) unique service × city landing pages, (3) review velocity and response rate, and (4) technical fundamentals like page speed and schema. Everything else is either supporting these four or noise.
The three surfaces you're ranking on
Every Google search for home services returns three types of results, and each is a separate ranking game.
- Local Services Ads (paid, top of page), ranked by review score, response rate, and bid, not by SEO.
- The Map Pack (top 3 map listings, below LSAs), ranked mostly by your Google Business Profile, review signals, and proximity.
- Organic Results (blue links below the map), ranked by your website's content, links, technical health, and E-E-A-T signals.
Winning the map pack
For most home services searches, the map pack captures more clicks than the organic results below it. Winning it comes down to three levers:
First, your Google Business Profile has to be complete and active. Correct primary category (not "contractor", the actual specific category like "HVAC contractor"), full service list, all service areas listed, weekly posts, weekly photo uploads, and Q&A answered.
Second, review velocity matters more than total count in most markets. Google favors profiles with recent, consistent review flow, 8 reviews in the last month beats 200 reviews from three years ago. Automate review requests from your CRM or dispatch system so every completed job triggers one within 30 minutes.
Third, proximity to the searcher heavily influences the map pack. You can't fake this, but you can build service-area pages targeting cities where you have real coverage and use them to rank in the organic results even in cities where you're too far to win the map pack.
Service × city page architecture
The most common structural mistake we see: one "Services" page listing everything, and one "Service Areas" page listing cities. That page structure ranks for almost nothing.
The pattern that works is one page per service × city combination you actually serve. If you offer HVAC repair, installation, and maintenance across 8 cities, that's 24 pages, each with unique copy about that service in that market, real project photos when possible, city-specific reviews, and internal links to related pages. Yes, it's more work. Yes, it's the difference between ranking and not ranking.
Reviews as an SEO channel
For local SEO, reviews are effectively a first-class ranking signal. Volume, average rating, recency, review keywords, and your response rate all feed into how Google ranks your GBP and how homeowners decide whether to call.
The review-related tactics that move the needle most for home services:
- SMS review requests sent within 30 minutes of job completion (roughly 3x the response rate of email).
- Requesting reviews from every customer, not just the ones who seemed happy, asking selectively both hurts your rating and violates Google's review policy.
- Responding to every review within 24 hours (yes, including the 5-star ones with 'Thanks!').
- Flagging clearly policy-violating reviews (fake, off-topic, competitor-generated) rather than fighting them in comments.
Technical SEO fundamentals
Home services doesn't require exotic technical SEO. It requires the basics done well: fast mobile load times (under 3 seconds), passing Core Web Vitals, proper schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList), clean URL structure, XML sitemap, and mobile-first design. Most contractor websites we audit are running on slow, template-locked builders that fail one or more of these. Fixing them typically produces measurable ranking gains within 60–90 days without any new content.
Content that converts and ranks
Beyond service × city pages, the highest-ROI content categories for home services SEO are cost pages ("how much does X cost in [city]"), comparison pages ("tankless vs. tank water heater"), problem/symptom pages ("why is my AC blowing warm air"), and buying guides. All four are searched heavily by high-intent homeowners and rank on pages that are also easy to convert with a strong CTA.
